AUDIO TRANSCRIPT:

One of my dearest friends, Natalie, commented on my last reel. In my reply, I told her we’ve entered goose-honking season here in Wisconsin.

She reminded me of a magical place we stayed in the Netherlands, where flocks of birds filled the fields and the skies around us.

Talking about it must have been an invocation, an incantation, because the next day, out my window, the sky filled with Ring-Billed Gulls.

First a lot, and then, even more.

Sometimes, my time with Natalie in the Netherlands and Belgium feels like a dream. What brings it back into reality are moments like yesterday.

Not long ago, I shared how reworking a four-year-old painting felt like punching through time — joining who I was then and who I am now. Different, but simultaneous. That’s what the gulls felt like too: an echo of the Netherlands, happening again in real time.

When we travel, we usually bring home souvenirs — objects to remind us. And I love that one of my souvenirs from those days is a reawakened emotion.
