My virtual studio has fallen a bit behind. I really wish and often imagine it as a real‑world space you could wander into whenever the mood strikes you—a place to sip cocoa, coffee, or tea and chat face‑to‑face. With warm mugs in hand, we could look at the pieces I’ve finished, catch a glimpse of what’s in progress, and linger over our drinks (and maybe nibble on a yummy snack) while we talk. Wouldn't that be amazing?
Working on this painting was going to therapy. Not the easy, fun therapy sessions (are there any like that?😉) but the kind that leaves you feeling wrung out and exhausted. And, you know that you are coming out of it with some important personal healing and growth.
This has been a hard season for me. I'm dealing with physical challenges due to a combination of menopausal hormonal stuff, lack of self-care/love, and just getting older, I suppose. TMJ pain leaves my right ear half‑blocked and ringing with persistent tinnitus. I have anxiety that ends up getting worse, hand-in-glove style, when my physical symptoms flare. It feels overwhelming at times—sensory overload meets dwindling resilience. I know things will change, but this is where I am right now.
Even when it doesn't "fix" me, painting helps. We took a short trip to see family last week. I was a little nervous about being away from my easel (even for a short while). (It turned out fine, and it was really great to see loved ones.) It has been good to be back, too. Painting has been, while not the easiest space, definitely my safest place!
What are your safe spaces? What rituals (creative or other) keep you grounded during challenging seasons?
This painting is titled "Up Against It", and is 18"x24". It carries within it all the emotions and the satisfaction of not avoiding but determinedly processing my journey. I’m grateful for every minute I could devote to it.

BTW - I have some belated good news that I'm excited to share with you. That will be coming soon.
